Fischer widow wins inheritance case

An Icelandic court has ruled that the widow of former world chess champion Bobby Fischer was his lawful wife and should inherit his estimated £1.2m (€1.4m) fortune.

Reykjavik District Court said fresh documents presented by Miyoko Watai proved that a 2004 wedding between her and Fischer was legal.

The ruling came after a dispute over Fischer's estate, in which two of his nephews contested the legality of Ms Watai's marriage to him.

The court also ruled that the nephews should pay Ms Watai £35,000 (€40,722) in legal costs.

Gudjon Olafur Jonsson, a lawyer for Fischer's nephews, said it was very likely that they would appeal to Iceland's Supreme Court.

Fischer, 64, died in Iceland in January 2008, leaving no will.
