Climate activists board animal feed ship in New Zealand

Greenpeace activists have lashed themselves to a cargo ship in New Zealand in a bid to stop it unloading animal feed for the country’s dairy herds.

Greenpeace claims millions of acres of rainforest are being cut down to plant palm plantations, destroying animal habitats and having a serious impact on the climate.

The 12 protesters boarded the East Ambition while it was at anchor off the Port of Tauranga, locking themselves to the anchor chain and four cargo cranes in a bid to prevent the cargo being unloaded.

They said its shipment of palm kernel animal feed from Indonesia’s palm plantations is destined for dairy farms.
