Three women die in Indian temple stampede

A stampede at a temple in north India today left three women dead and at least 50 others injured.

The incident occurred when hundreds of Hindu pilgrims were praying at the Siddhanath temple on top of a hill in Jehanabad in the state of Bihar.

News that a railing had broken under the pressure of crowding devotees led to the stampede.

A medical team rushed to the site and the injured were taken to a nearby hospital.

Around 25,000 people were attending the Siddhanath temple, which is on one of the highest peaks in the area.

Dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, it is located in the basement of an ancient temple which could date back to the 7th century AD.
