Israel parking protest continues

Ultra-Orthodox Jews are protesting for a second consecutive day in Jerusalem against the opening of a car park on Saturdays, the Jewish Sabbath when religious Jews are forbidden to drive.

A police spokesman said thousands of Ultra-Orthodox protesters were on the streets today.

More than a dozen were arrested for throwing rocks at passing cars and tossing rubbish at officers, he said.

Earlier this month, police used water cannons to subdue rioters at a car park Jerusalem City Hall wanted open on Saturdays.

Religious Jews believe driving violates the biblical command to rest on the Sabbath.

About 1,000 secular Jews held a counter protest nearby at City Hall. Some held placards that read: “No Religious Coercion.”
