McCain said to have won Republican vote in New York

John McCain will win New York and all of the state's 101 Republican delegates, CNN projected.

Mr McCain won the endorsement of former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani last week when the latter’s campaign collapsed in Florida and the former Vietnam prisoner of war was at a rally in the city early Tuesday morning.

It will be a significant win for Mr McCain, who has scooped more than 180 delegates with victories in four winner-take-all states – Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware and now New York.

Speaking to supporters at his campaign headquarters in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mr Huckabee said: ``Over the past few days, a lot of people have been trying to say that this is a two-man race.

“Well, you know what, it is – and we’re in it.”

He went on: “Tonight, we’re proving that we’re still on our feet and, much to the amazement of many, we’re getting there folks, we’re getting there.”

The former Baptist minister and former Arkansas governor said he was standing for small business owners, would secure America’s borders and “preserve the sanctity of human life”.

He added he was winning across America’s Southern states.

Mr Huckabee said it was tough for someone of 52 to say things like “Roll tide, roll!” but added he was doing it today.

To cheers from his supporters, he said: “I think before the night is over I’ll even be singing Rocky Top.

“Today has been a day when the people have spoken and today people across the country are saying, ’Yes, we heard what the pundits said, but this is our vote not theirs; this is our election, not theirs; this is our presidency, not theirs.’

“And for all those people who have made sacrifices to help us be here, I want to say thank you.”

He said that until the “magic number” of delegates was reached, and the Republican nominee for president chosen, he would be “answering the bell every time there is a new round”.

He told his supporters that they would help him become the 44th president of America in a few months.

Mr Obama will also win Kansas, where his mother is from, and Connecticut, CNN projected.

At the Romney campaign headquarters in Boston, the former Massachusetts governor told his supporters that the ``one thing that's clear is this campaign's going on''.

To chants of “Mitt, Mitt, Mitt”, he said: “I think there were some people who thought it was all going to be done tonight, but it’s not all done tonight, we’re going to keep on battling, we’re going to go all the way to the convention and we’re going to win this thing and we’re going to get to the White House.”

He said the results were going to be “close” but added he did not know how many delegates he would finish with.

He also said that the three states where he has lived – Michigan, Massachusetts and Utah – had all voted for him.

“This is the greatest nation on earth,” he said.

“It must be, it always has been. The world depends upon our sacrifice, our commitment and dedication to peace and prosperity and to liberty.

“This is the greatest nation in the history of the earth. We will keep it the hope of the earth. With your help, we’ll do it together.”
