Obama and Clinton split Democratic vote
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama appeared to be splitting the Democratic vote today as the first results from the Super Tuesday elections came in.
The former First Lady will win New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Arkansas while Mr Obama will win Delaware, Georgia and Illinois, CNN projections show.
In the Republican contest, John McCain will win Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey and Delaware.
His main rival Mitt Romney will win his home state of Massachusetts and Mike Huckabee will win his home state of Arkansas after winning in West Virginia earlier today.
Mrs Clinton won both her home state of New York and Arkansas, where she was the state’s First Lady for many years, and Illinois senator Mr Obama also won his home state.
But results from several key states, including delegate-rich California, are yet to come in.
If Mr Obama can win in California, where he enjoyed a late surge in the polls to tie the state with Mrs Clinton, it will be a significant blow to her campaign.
Along with California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Arizona and New Mexico will all be key.
Senator Ted Kennedy’s recent endorsement of Mr Obama could help him in Massachusetts, where the former First Lady once had a comfortable lead in the polls.
His endorsement was seen as a significant shun to the Clinton campaign.
Missouri, Arizona and New Mexico could go either way, as the pair are close in the polls.
