Turkey has hit more than 200 Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq since December 16, killing hundreds, the army said today.

Up to 175 rebels were killed on December 16 alone, the military said in a statement posted on its website.

The military said other hideouts were hit in a cross-border air operation on December 22, followed by artillery fire.

The Turkish military launched its first confirmed cross border operation since the US-led invasion of Iraq on December 16, prompting criticism from Iraqi officials that the operation violated Iraqi sovereignty.

That operation was followed by an incursion by ground forces, who crossed the border when they spotted a group of Kurdish rebels preparing to infiltrate into Turkey.

The last confirmed cross-border offensive was on Saturday.
