New mass grave found in Bosnia
Forensic experts have found a new mass grave in a mine-infested area in the eastern Bosnian town of Rogatica.
Zafer Rascic, head of the team working on the grave, said excavations began yesterday and “four bodies were immediately visible”.
He added that the location was heavily mined and his team managed to reach and exhume only one of the bodies.
“The documents found on the body indicate the man was from Rogatica,” Rascis said. DNA analysis will provide more information.
Forensic teams have been discovering mass graves throughout Bosnia for years, collecting remains and extracting DNA from bones to be matched with DNA collected from family members. Once a match is found, the body is returned to the family for burial.
Tens of thousands were killed or went missing during Bosnia’s 1992-95 war between the three ethnic groups living there. Most of the victims were Bosniak Muslims.
Experts say that some of the bodies of the more than 20,000 people who remained missing after the war will never be found.
