Judge delivers verdicts for 1993 Mumbai bombings

An Indian judge today finished delivering the verdicts on 123 defendants for the 1993 Mumbai bombings, India’s worst terror attack.

Judge Pramod Kode found the final six men guilty of involvement in the March 12, 1993, bombings that killed 257 people.

Today’s convictions takes the number of defendants convicted to 100 with 23 others acquitted.

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt was one of defendants in the trial.

Last week he was found guilty of possessing illegal arms, but acquitted of a more serious conspiracy charge.

The trial, described as India’s longest, began on June 6, 1995.

Kode began delivering the judgment in September and sentences are likely to be announced in February next year.

The six men were convicted for undergoing weapons and explosives training in Pakistan in January 1993, participating in conspiracy meetings, packing the powerful RDX explosive into cars and scooters used in the blast and for lobbing hand grenades in a Mumbai suburb on March 12, 1993.

Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said prosecution and defence lawyers will begin arguments on sentencing next week, a process that could take up to a month.
