Gunman kills three at Thanksgiving day family gathering

A family dispute in California, turned deadly when a gunman burst into a Thanksgiving Day gathering and opened fire, killing three people, police said.

Two men were being held after the shooting, which occurred shortly yesterday at an apartment complex in north Oakland.

A gunman walked into an apartment where 11 people were having dinner and began firing, authorities said.

Two women and one man were killed and another man suffered a broken back when he tried to escape by jumping out a second-floor window, police said.

The gunman then fled, prompting a authorities to close down surrounding blocks and conduct an apartment-by-apartment sweep.

Asmero Tewolda surrendered to police several hours later, after barricading himself in the complex, police said. His brother, whose name was not released, was also taken into custody, although his alleged role in the incident was unclear.

“Right now we are looking at both of them as suspects,” said Officer Roland Holmgren, a police spokesman.

It was not immediately clear how the suspects were related to the victims.

Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing family dispute, said Lt Kenny Whitman. Several handguns were recovered at the scene, he said.

The man who jumped out the window was taken to Highland Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, police said. The names of the victims were not released.
