Iraqi Army moves to restore order in Amarra

The Iraqi Army has moved into the southern city of Amarra to quell the rising violence between police and Shia militias.

Clashes between the groups have escalated over the past few days with over 30 people have been killed in the fighting over the pat two days.

British security forces left the region over two months ago, leaving the Iraqi security forces to impose order.

The army was deployed following a meeting between representatives of Iraqi Prime Minister , Nouri al-Maliki and Shi'ite cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr, with both sides agreeing to do their best to stop the mayhem.

The meeting was held in the holy city of Mecca, where numerous religious leaders from across Iraq's sectarian divide have called for a halt to violence in the country.

A document which drew upon Islamic texts saying shedding Muslim blood is forbidden was sign3ed by the leaders and representatives.

It urges the continuation of Iraq's unity, the protection of holy sites and the release of innocent prisoners.
