Polish authorities order roofs to be cleared of snow

Polish authorities worked today to determine the cause of the roof collapse that killed 62 people in southern Poland, as the number of foreign victims rose to eight after a German was identified.

Throughout the country, authorities were ordering roofs of hundreds of buildings cleared of snow and ice following the accident at a racing pigeon show on Saturday near the southern city of Katowice, Polish media reported.

About 200 people were evacuated from a supermarket in Lodz late yesterday after its roof apparently buckled slightly under the weight of snow, TVN24 reported.

The roof was quickly cleared and no one was hurt.

Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz was expected in Katowice later today to hear an update on the investigation into why the roof of the roof of the exhibition hall collapsed.

This morning, investigators could be seen among the twisted debris collecting samples for the probe led by public prosecutors.
