Beijing invites designs for 2008 Olympic torch
Beijing Olympic organisers today began soliciting design proposals for the Olympic torch for the 2008 Games, one of several campaigns intended to excite public participation in the event.
Organisers are looking for “a perfect blending of artistry and technology” for the torch, said Zhang Ming, head of cultural programs for the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG). Design suggestions will be accepted until February 2.
Though BOCOG welcomes suggestions from ordinary people in China and abroad, Chinese design colleges and professionals are likely to have an edge, given the technical requirements, Zhang said at a news conference.
Proposals should include three-dimensional views of the torch, suggestions for the cauldron where the Olympic flame will burn during the Games and specifics about the materials to be used, among other requirements.
The design campaign fits with other efforts by BOCOG to involve the public and generate support and enthusiasm for the Olympics.
