Clinton was spying at Oxford, claims journalist
British journalist Christopher Hitchens today claimed that former US President Bill Clinton was spying for the CIA while they were students together at Oxford University.
Mr Clinton reported to the intelligence agency on fellow opponents of the Vietnam war during his time as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford in 1968, the Vanity Fair columnist alleged.
“I think he was a double,” Mr Hitchens told right-wing Washington magazine Doublethink.
“Somebody was giving information to (the CIA) about the anti-war draft resisters, and I think it was probably him.”
President Clinton was frequently criticised by opponents for alleged draft-dodging, saying he studied at Oxford in order to avoid conscription and being forced into the Vietnam conflict.
Mr Hitchens, who was critical of Mr Clinton during his presidency, said they also shared a girlfriend during their college years who has since become a “very famous radical lesbian”.
He added: “So one of us was doing something wrong, or right.”
The former left-wing commentator also said he planned to support President George W Bush during his re-election campaign because he was the only candidate serious about fighting the war on terrorism.
