Judge: Clonaid vice president must testify

A vice president of Clonaid, the company that claims to have created the world’s first cloned human, must testify today at a Florida court hearing seeking to appoint a guardian for the child, a judge has ruled.

But Judge John Frusciante said Thomas Kaenzig can give evidence by telephone, if necessary. Kaenzig’s lawyers have said he does not know where the child or her mother is.

Clonaid has not identified the mother, and has backed away from promises to prove their cloning claims through independent DNA tests.

It has said it will not identify the mother out of fears the court may take the baby – Eve – away from her.

Miami lawyer Bernard Siegel has filed a petition in Fort Lauderdale, saying he wants to protect the child’s interests.

Kaenzig is a self-professed member of the Raelian sect, which believes aliens first populated Earth by creating clones.
