Vietnam: Authorities find war remains

Authorities in central Vietnam have recovered the remains of 14 communist soldiers from three mass graves apparently dug during the Vietnam War, an official said today.

A team of 50 militiamen and local villagers also found personal effects including rubber sandals, hammocks and a watch, according to Le Van Minh, deputy regional chief for labour, war invalids and social affairs.

The three-day excavation, in the central province of Quang Ngai, ended last Friday. The recovered remains, none of which were identified, were buried at the district war cemetery that day, Minh said.

Officials believe the soldiers were killed in fighting with South Korean soldiers in late 1966.
