Clashes continue in east Africa's largest slum

Bloody clashes in East Africa’s largest slum continued for a second day today as police struggled to control the escalating violence.

Witnesses said many people were injured in Kibera, a sprawling shanty town that is home to more than 600,000 people, just three miles from central Nairobi.

At least 12 people were killed and 28 injured yesterday by machete wielding youths.

The fighting is the worst in a series of clashes that started 10 days ago when President Daniel arap Moi - whose private residence overlooks Kibera - called for lower rents in the slum.

Kibera was settled after the First World War by soldiers who fought with the British Army in the King’s African Rifles regiment.
