Bomb blast injures 12 at political rally

An explosion at a political rally in the home town of jailed former Philippines President Joseph Estrada has left 12 people injured, one seriously.

The rally was being held for Liberal Party candidates, part of the government's ruling "people power" coalition, ahead of Monday's local and congressional elections.

The blast occurred while fireworks were being set off in Manila's San Juan district, where Estrada once was mayor - a post his son currently holds.

Four vehicles were damaged and hospitals reported that most of the injuries appeared to be minor.

Violence often accompanies campaigning in the Philippines, but much of it is usually in rural areas, where several candidates already have been killed.

There have been concerns about explosions or other problems after last week's attempt by Estrada backers to storm the presidential palace.
