US: An American Twitter user has been sent dozens of messages meant for England coach Roy Hodgson — because his user name on the site is @woy.

QUIRKY WORLD ... Soccer tweeters accuse Woy instead of Roy

England fans were left frustrated after Russia grabbed a stoppage time equaliser in their Euro 2016 Group B clash in Marseille on Saturday night.

The 1-1 draw means Wales top the group after the first set of games, with England and Chris Coleman’s men set to face off in Lens on Thursday.

Mike Woycheck, an operations director from Pittsburgh, was unwittingly drawn into proceedings after fans took out their disappointment on the social media site.

His account received dozens of messages including “play Vardy and Kane together” and “@woy is technically clueless. For sure England can’t win anything under him”.

Mr Woycheck tweeted: “Apparently an English soccer coach is doing something bad because Twitter is blaming me for it.”

Emotional jackpot

US: A World Series of Poker player says he hit an “emotional jackpot” thanks to an Uber driver who returned his $7,000 (€6,220).

Jacob Brundage, of Lakeland, Florida, said he lost a tote filled with cash and playing chips June 1.

The 39-year-old says he realized the bag was in an Uber car that he rode from The Venetian to the Rio.

Brundage failed to reach the driver through the app and enlisted a group of waiting Uber drivers to help.

The driver, who wants to remain anonymous, called Brundage and returned the bag. Brundage gave him $200 as a reward.

Uber spokeswoman Maui Cheska Orozo says this is likely the most expensive item ever left in an Uber car in Las Vegas.

Bird drop

Britain: Live owls have been removed from the production of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child after one escaped into the audience.

Animal welfare charities welcomed the producer’s decision to drop the live birds after a barn owl flew over the audience instead of returning to its handler during the show’s first preview on June 7.

Peta UK said this was “a huge relief for all Harry Potter fans who care about animals”.

Slippery customer

US: An Arkansas woman escaped injury and managed to safely stop her car after a 1.2m rat snake came out of her dashboard and slithered across her feet as she drove on Interstate 49.

Rat snakes aren’t venomous or generally a threat to people, but Kelly Swisher says the snake she encountered gave her a “nails on a chalkboard” sort of feeling.

“It was rough and scaly,” said Swisher.

“I do not know if I had my hands on the steering wheel or not. I am not the most flexible person in the world, but I can guarantee my knees were up next to my ears.”

She said the snake first slithered back into the dashboard and she hoped it would stay there until she was able to get off the interstate and stop. “That did not work out,” she said. “Here he comes, and he wound up in my back seat,” before she finally could get off the roadway, stop and get out of the car. Washington County animal control officers came and captured the snake.

Own goal

Iran: The Iranian football federation has reportedly suspended a goalkeeper for six months for a series of offences including wearing yellow trousers reminiscent of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Sosha Makani, formerly a goalie for Persepolis Football Club, was pictured smiling and wearing the offending dotted trousers, but they were apparently too close to looking like SpongeBob for the liking of the authorities.

Athletes and celebrities in Iran have been targeted by hardliners in the judiciary and elsewhere for what they wear and how they behave. The ISNA newsagency said Makani can appeal against his suspension.

Top that

Austria: It takes a lot of beers to collect 10 million bottle tops, but Austrian Hans Heiland did not drink them all himself.

Mr Heiland, from the town of Ybbs, west of Vienna, said most of the caps have come from other people, many of them by post, after his passion for collecting them become known.

He started his hobby five years ago and state broadcaster ORF said his collection now weighs 18 tons.

He has sold the caps to a metal collector for €1,500 and plans to give the money to a needy family in the region.

Deer hunter

US: Authorities in New York City are moving forward with efforts to control the overpopulation of deer on Staten Island — with vasectomies.

The Staten Island Advance reported comptroller Scott Stringer is allowing the city to fast-track the contracting process on a €1.8m study.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation must also approve the plan.

The department has said that deer fertility control programmes have “limited effectiveness”
