Witches concrete over the cracks of literary shortlists
The figure-hugging frock has divided opinion across social media, with some people viewing it as black and blue and others claiming to see white and gold. A picture of the £50 (€70) knee-length dress is reported to have first been posted online by Caitlin McNeill, 21, from Scotland.
Although Birmingham-based Roman Originals describe the dress as being royal blue and black, friends of Ms McNeill had noticed several different colours in the garment.
Celebrities who have tweeted about the dress include Kim Kardashian and her husband Kanye West.
Advanced research into concrete and a guide on how to divorce a witch are among the books in the running for one of the world’s oddest literary prizes.
Readers will be asked to pick a winner in the Diagram Prize for Oddest Book Title of the Year 2014 from seven strange publications.
The first title on the short-list is Advanced Pavement Research: Selected, Peer Reviewed Papers From The 3rd International Conference On Concrete Pavements Design, Construction, And Rehabilitation. It is up against Divorcing A Real Witch: For Pagans And The People That Used To Love Them; Strangers Have The Best Candy; The Madwoman In The Volvo: My Year Of Raging Hormones; and Nature’s Nether Regions, described as a “fascinating history of the evolution of genitals”.
Performers in hot pants, jackboots, and Nazi insignia high-kicked to the Springtime For Hitler tune as delegates for a political party’s conference arrived.
The dancers, from Mel Brooks’s musical The Producers, caused the scene outside Ukip’s conference venue, the Winter Gardens in Margate, Kent.
The seven-strong troupe of female dancers performed a choreographed routine as Springtime For Hitler blared from a PA system on the tank turret.
It emerged that the cast were in Margate to promote the new touring production of Brooks’s acclaimed musical comedy, which opens in Bromley on March 7.
Adam Spiegel, producer of The Producers, said: “We open the UK tour of The Producers in Bromley next week and Margate seemed a perfect place to start the promotion. I’m disappointed but not entirely surprised to see that Ukip are trying to hitch a publicity ride on the back of the show.”
An Action Man judo outfit which is so rare even experts were unsure it still existed has been found in a retired toy rep’s garage and could fetch £20,000 (€27,500) at auction.
The pristine boxed set dates back to 1969 or 1970 — such is its rarity experts cannot even be sure when it was first produced. Action Man sporting kits were not a huge hit for producer Palitoy, as children preferred the figure to stick to soldiering.
Police have charged two men accused of climbing a 61m crane in Boulder, Colorado, at night and parachuting to the street below.
A spokesman said that 24-year-old Scott Murga and 35-year-old Richard Edward Servantes have been cited for second-degree trespassing.
Two officers were on patrol when a man told them someone had fallen and needed help. The officers found Murga injured and lying in the road wearing a parachute. Dozens of witnesses leaving bars in the area at the time said they saw two men parachute from the crane.
