Video and photos purportedly of Foley emerged late last night. A YouTube video — entitled A Message to #America (from the #IslamicState) — identified a man on his knees as “James Wright Foley” and showed his murder. It also showed another man it claimed is journalist Steven Sotloff, whose future the executioner said “depends” on President Barack Obama’s “next decision”.

Foley was in Syria covering the civil war when he went missing. In an earlier report, the Columbia Journalism Review said he was believed to have been held in Damascus.
