QUIRKY WORLD ... Man is arrested after stabbing watermelon
The Register Citizen of Torrington reports Carmine Cervellino of Thomaston was held on charges of threatening and disorderly conduct. He was released after posting a $500 bail.
Police say the woman had reported finding drugs, including marijuana, in Cervellino’s tool box. He was not arrested.
They say she later returned home to find the watermelon on the counter with a butcher’s knife in it. She reported that Cervellino then entered the room and began carving the watermelon. She called the incident passive-aggressive and menacing.
Shaun the Sheep has topped a poll of favourite children’s characters over the last 70 years.
The Aardman creation, who made his debut in the 1995 Wallace and Gromit film A Close Shave, triumphed in a poll of the best BBC children’s characters though the decades.
The shortlist featured shows such as The Magic Roundabout, Teletubbies and In The Night Garden.
Shaun — who was given his own animated TV series in 2007 — knocked Postman Pat into second place.
Space tourists could be blasting into orbit from one of eight sites named as possible locations for Britain’s first spaceport in just four years’ time.
Six of the sites shortlisted for the spaceport, due to open in 2018, are in Scotland. They include Glasgow Prestwick Airport and RAF Lossiemouth.
All have to meet strict criteria, including being a safe distance from densely populated areas and a runway that can be extended to more than 3,000m (9,842ft). The aim is to use the spaceport to launch tourists into space as well as commercial satellites.

Some three dozen ETAs took their gyrating hips to the stage to see who could do the most convincing portrayal in the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist competition during Elvis Week. Adam Fitzpatrick, 29, from Penticton, British Columbia, won the top prize and $2,500.
The competition watchdog has imposed fines totalling €338m on 21 sausage manufacturers for colluding on prices.
The Federal Cartel Office said the fines also included penalties against 33 individuals. The companies punished included Nestle subsidiary Herta, as well as Meica, Boeklunder and Wiesenhof.
The cartel office said major sausage-makers started colluding in 2003 to push through higher prices, agreeing on price ranges for various products. It said it was tipped off by an anonymous informant. Eleven companies decided to co-operate with authorities and admit wrongdoing.
Police in the town of Blaine, Washington, near the Canadian border found a car in a bank parking lot on July 2 that had been stolen in Miami just about two days earlier.
The Bellingham Herald reports the thief was in a hurry. According to Google Maps it would take 50 hours to drive the 3,400 miles nonstop. Police don’t know who took the black 2012 Jeep Patriot or why they sped from one corner of the country to the other.
