Quirky World ... Hero cat makes star appearance

The cat, named Tara, was captured on security camera on May 13 when she pounced on a dog which was attacking 4-year-old Jeremy Triantafilo. The video, which has garnered 21m views on YouTube, shows the dog biting and attempting to drag the boy. Within seconds, Tara leapt out and chased the dog away. Jeremy needed 10 stitches in his left leg after the incident.

There was a failed attempt at the game to have Tara “throw” the pitch using a baseball attached to a fishing line. Tara might have been nervous, so Jeremy’s father, Ryan, helped the cat throw the pitch as he held her in his arms.

AUSTRALIA: People Down Under call tiny swimming trunks “budgie smugglers” but the term might have new meaning after customs officials at Sydney airport said they found 16 wild birds’ eggs in the crotch of a passenger’s pants.

The 39-year-old Czech man was selected for a baggage examination after arriving on a flight from Dubai. Australian Customs and Border Protection Service officers frisked the man and “allegedly found 16 small eggs concealed in his groin area”.

The man, whose name has not been released, was to appear in court on a charge of importing eggs without a permit. The charge carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence. There was no word on whether it was budgies that were allegedly smuggled.

SPAIN: Spanish bulls have scored a symbolic victory at Madrid’s prestigious Las Ventas ring by injuring three matadors and forcing organisers to call off the bullfight.

The fight, the 12th of the San Isidro festival, was stopped after bulls gored two matadors and tossed a third into the air.

Las Ventas said it was the first time in 35 years that a fight was stopped at the ring due to matador injuries.

The first torero, David Mora, was still being treated in a Madrid hospital but was said to be out of danger. The other two bullfighters were expected to be released from hospital later.

ENGLAND: A High Court judge has made legal history by being styled “Ms Justice”.

High Court judges are traditionally titled “Mr Justice” or “Mrs Justice”. But judicial heads have given Alison Russell, who became a High Court judge in January and specialises in family law, permission to use the title “Ms Justice Russell”.

Listings in the family division of the High Court, where she sits, have started to refer to her as “Ms Justice Russell”.

ENGLAND: Peregrine falcon chicks have hatched on England’s tallest cathedral spire for the first time in more than 60 years.

Three chicks hatched in a nesting box installed on Salisbury Cathedral’s 123m spire. The last time the bird of prey nested at the cathedral was in 1953.

Clerk of works Gary Price said: “It’s amazingly exciting news that, after 61 years — including a failed attempt last year — we have three live baby peregrine chicks. Mother and chicks are doing well.”

USA: After setting things abuzz by trapping customers in a store, a hive of honeybees was safely removed from Danville in central Kentucky.

Emergency crews were called because customers were afraid to leave the store. Fire chief Woody Ball said first responders quickly realised they would need help, so called Gary and Joyce Taylor, who live nearby and have experience in bee removal.

They arrived to find more than a million honeybees swarming in the area. Although the situation had the potential to carry a sting, Ball said there were no injuries to people or bees.
