Quirky World... Man breaks into neighbours house ’for eggs’

The Bucks County Courier Times says Middletown police contend Christopher King didn’t have an omelette on his mind when he climbed through the window.

Police who responded to the report of a burglary in progress say they arrived to find him walking out the front door. They say they found dresser and cabinet drawers and doors open throughout the house.

Detective Patrick Nicastro says King claimed he climbed through his neighbour’s window because he wanted some eggs for breakfast.

The homeowner told police nothing appeared to be missing. King is charged with burglary and related charges.

USA: A 102-year-old woman said she was disappointed racing great Mario Andretti could not go faster than 180mph (290km/h) during their laps around a speedway track in Indianapolis.

Edith Pittenger, of Muncie, said she had a great time riding with Andretti in a two-seat race car. “He said 180 is the maximum,” she told The Star Press. “I wanted to do 200, but he wouldn’t do that.”

She ended her speedway laps with a drink of milk — just like the tradition of Indy 500 winners in the victory lane. Her grandson said he was amazed by her sense of adventure.

USA: A teenager from Ohio is reeling in attention for a big catch after he spotted a 3ft carp swimming in receding floodwaters on his street.

He scooped it into his arms as his mother caught the scene on video.

Sixteen-year-old North Royalton resident Jake Sawyer waded through more than ankle-deep water as he stalked the big fish in the dark and eventually trapped it.

He says he suspects the large grass carp came from a nearby pond, which swelled during heavy rains that caused flash-flooding in the area.

He says he wanted to ensure the fish did not become trapped and die in the street, so he carried it back to the pond. He estimates it weighed 40lb.

Jake says it is a fishing tale he will never forget.

ENGLAND: A skyscraper which hit the headlines after its unusual design was blamed for starting fires and causing damage by reflecting the sun’s rays is to get a permanent fix.

The Walkie Talkie —officially 20 Fenchurch St — became known as the Walkie Scorchie because of its apparent ability to bounce heat from the sun on to buildings in the next street in the City of London.

But developer Land Securities said it had received planning permission for a “brise soleil” sunshade to be attached to the building to replace a temporary system erected last summer, with work due to start this month.

In September, angry business owners in Eastcheap said the £200m (€245m) project, deigned by Rafael Vinoly, had blistered paintwork, caused tiles to smash, and singed fabric.

ENGLAND: A safari park is celebrating the birth of the first baby elephant in its 41-year history.

The baby African elephant, now a week old, weighed in at 100kg (221lb) when he was born at West Midlands Safari Park at 5.30pm on May 5.

His mother Five gave birth to him after a 22-month pregnancy following artificial insemination using semen that had been frozen and stored in a French laboratory after being taken from an elephant on a reserve in South Africa.

The male calf, yet to be named, is only the second to be born in the world using this technique.
