Mum delivers 13lb 13oz baby ... without drugs or surgery

Kendall Stewardson spent six hours in labour to deliver Asher, without a caesarean section or an epidural injection.

Asher Stewardson was born on Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, measuring 23.5in long. Big babies appear to run in the family, as, 15 months ago, his brother Judah was born weighing 12lb 1oz, and both their parents weighed over 10lb at birth.

“When he came out we all thought he was smaller [than Judah] and then we put him on the scale,” Kendall told local television reporters.

“We were very surprised, but he’s three inches longer. Everyone double-takes when they see him, but for us it’s pretty standard and it wasn’t much worse than probably most people’s.”

Mercy hospital officials say only 0.1% of all babies weigh more than 11lb at birth.

Kendall said she and husband Joshua wanted to avoid a caesarean delivery because they felt it would not have been good for her or Asher.

“And just to have two babies that had absolutely no issues, we’re definitely very blessed that way,” Joshua told NBC.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest baby born naturally was a boy born to 8ft tall Anna Haining Bates and 7ft 9in tall Martin Van Buren Bates in 1879. Their son weighed 23lb 12oz but sadly only lived for 11 hours.
