Detective Chief Superintendent Bob Small spent about an hour with the family at their house in the Crescent, Rothley, before leaving in an unmarked car.

The East Midlands force refused to confirm or comment on the visit yesterday.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “The nature of visits to the McCanns by any officers from Leicestershire Constabulary is not something we are prepared to discuss.

“We reiterate that this is a Portuguese police investigation.”

Meanwhile, the employers of Madeleine’s father, Gerry McCann, said they would discuss his return to work “at the appropriate time”.

Dr McCann is a consultant cardiologist at Glen-field Hospital in Leicester.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said: “Gerry is currently on unpaid leave and a date has not yet been set for his return to work.

“At the appropriate time we and Gerry will discuss the arrangements and best time for him to return.”

Little has been seen of Gerry and his wife Kate McCann since their return to Britain on Sunday.

Journalists from around the world have been camped in the village since the McCanns arrived home.

Prayers were said for the McCann family during a Mass at their local chapel yesterday, which the couple did not attend.
