In the official souvenir, the princes wrote: “It is 10 years since our mother died, but her remarkable work and her wonderful gift for touching the lives of so many people, live on.

“This concert is our way of remembering her the way we knew her — full of fun and laughter and full of a love of life.”

They said they were grateful to the artists and the people who bought tickets.

“Please join us in wishing our beloved mother a very happy birthday.”

It would have been the princess’s 46th birthday yesterday.

Diana’s siblings Earl Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes also penned their memories of the princess in the programme.

They wrote: “She was a mother who adored her children above all else. To see them pull off this stunning concert, in celebration of her memory, would have reduced her to tears of joy.”

While on stage, Harry delivered a message to his Household Cavalry squadron serving in Iraq, telling them he wished he could be there with them.

Soldiers across Afghanistan and Iraq will be listening to a radio simulcast of the concert.

The prince said: “I wish I was there with you. I’m sorry I can’t be. But to all of those on operations at the moment, we’d both like to say — stay safe.”

Among the guests was photographer Mario Testino, whose famous black and white images of the princess filled the stage as the backdrop during Elton John’s opening set.

Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon said there was no extra pressure at being named Diana’s favourites, adding: “That was something that was said a while ago. This is 25 years later. She was great to us.”

Those who performed included singer Anastacia and singer and actor Jason Donovan. Andrew Lloyd Webber described Anastacia as “absolutely fantastic”.

“I have fallen in love with her.”

Donovan, who was singing part of a Joseph medley of songs, said the occasion was “about what this woman achieved in her life. It is fun.

“The tragedy of her death cannot be ignored, but today we will (put) that to one side and celebrate her life.”

Welsh legend Tom Jones, said he was performing the song “Kiss” as Diana “loved that song”.

Speaking about what Diana’s reaction to the concert would have been, he said: “I think she would have loved it, because Princess Diana loved music.”

Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas and Joss Stone also sang.

Status Quo performed Rockin’ All Over The World — the same song they sang in front of Diana at Live Aid in 1985.
