Sam Ricketts, Paul Robinson, Zat Knight and Sean Davis all made the starting line-up following their arrivals from Hull, West Brom, Aston Villa and Portsmouth respectively.

Steve Bruce marked his first competitive game in charge of the Black Cats by naming new signings Darren Bent, Lorik Cana and Lee Cattermole in his side.

The trio were signed from Tottenham, Marseille and Wigan respectively, while Fraizer Campbell was named among the substitutes following his £3.5m move from Manchester United.
