Injury forces Baines out

Everton full-back Leighton Baines is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks because of a hamstring injury.

Baines suffered the setback in the 3-0 Barclays Premier League victory against Fulham on Saturday when he pulled up in the first half.

It means the former Wigan defender will sit out the Carling Cup match against West Ham on Wednesday at Upton Park.

However, Everton believe Baines can recover in time for the hectic festive programme.

Head physio Mick Rathbone told evertonfc.com: “He has hurt his hamstring.

“We are going to give him intensive treatment to try and get him back for the Christmas fixtures.”

Meanwhile, Steven Pienaar is anxious to extend his stay at Everton beyond this season.

The South African midfielder, on loan from Borussia Dortmund, loves the atmosphere at Goodison Park.

Pienaar, 25, helped Everton stretch their unbeaten run to 10 games with the victory against Fulham.

He told Sky Sports News: “I want to play (permanently) for this club.

“The supporters are unbelievable. They are always behind the team. My colleagues are so friendly and so warm – I think everyone would want to play for a club like this.”
