Fergie happy to strike right balance
Manchester United’s classy strike quartet are reviving memories of the club’s march to the treble in 1999 for Alex Ferguson.
The United manager believes the fact he had four top-quality strikers eight seasons ago helped the club win the Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the only one of the four still at Old Trafford but with he, Wayne Rooney, Henrik Larsson and Louis Saha all vying for places, it puts Ferguson in an enviable position.
Back in 1999, it was Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Solskjaer, and Ferguson said: “My thoughts go back to our treble year with no doubt in my mind that the key to our success in 1999 on three fronts was the fact that we also had four top-class strikers.
“I was able to vary my selections and keep our attack fresh and firing on all cylinders with each of them making a telling contribution as we went quickly from one competition to another, especially in the closing stages when the games arrived thick and fast.
“Hopefully, with four strikers available now, we will be able once more to keep the goals coming in the Premiership, the FA Cup and soon in Europe,” he told United Review.
