McCall denies Rangers link
Stuart McCall admits he would relish the chance to join the Rangers management team but insists he has had no approach from the Ibrox club.
The Sheffield United assistant manager has been linked with a return to his former club Glasgow following the departure of Paul Le Guen, but does not expect to be offered a role.
His former Ibrox boss Walter Smith, currently Scotland manager, has been strongly tipped to replace Le Guen alongside club legend Ally McCoist and that has raised the possibility of a place for McCall on the coaching staff.
However, he told BBC Radio Scotland: “I give you a 100% guarantee I have not had any approach.
“Of course it would be great [but] I don’t know where the stories have come from. Deep down I can’t see it happening and I don’t think anything will happen.
“It has been hugely flattering to be linked with it but it has not even come out yet if Walter and Ally have got it. For Rangers’ sake I hope they have.”
McCall admitted he did not want to see Smith’s possible involvement interfere in his work with the national side.
“They [Smith’s team] have changed Scottish football around with the help of [assistant manager] Tommy Burns.”
“It’s a difficult one – I want Scotland to do really well and obviously I want Rangers to do well. It will be interesting to see what it holds in the next 48 hours.
“Everyone knows how much I feel about Walter after playing seven years under him.”
McCall also backed McCoist, who has a thriving television career, to make a triumphant return to Ibrox.
“People always see Ally with a big smiling face on his TV, which he does brilliantly. But he has got a deep desire,” added McCall.
“He has got a hunger for football and a big one for Rangers.
“We do talk occasionally. He is a very strong-minded person and I know it’s something he would love to do.”
