Gary Neville could be in trouble with the Football Association after running the length of the field to celebrate Rio Ferdinand’s winner in front of Liverpool’s fans at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United skipper was captured by television cameras grabbing his shirt and gesticulating towards Liverpool’s supporters.

Neville had been the subject of abuse by the visiting fans throughout the game.

The England defender’s brother Phil, who was working for Sky TV, claimed it should quickly be consigned to the history books.

He said: “I think every time United beat Liverpool, my brother always does that. He loves Manchester United so much and that’s the way he shows his emotions.

“Scoring in the 89th minute is a killer for the opposition team and I think you just let that go.”

Chelsea winger Arjen Robben was sent off for celebrating in front of his own fans against Sunderland last weekend after leaving the field of play.
