Magpies confirm Bellamy's extra lay-off
Newcastle have confirmed that Craig Bellamy has been given an extra week before he is expected to return to pre-season training as the race for his signature intensifies.
The 25-year-old Welshman, whose spectacular bust-up with manager Graeme Souness in January effectively signalled the end of his career on Tyneside, was expected to return with the bulk of his team-mates today.
However, as Everton and Aston Villa stepped up their pursuit of the player who continues to be courted by Celtic – he spent the second half of last season on loan there – he did not appear at the club’s Darsley Park training headquarters.
The Magpies, however, insisted there had been no change of plan.
“Craig Bellamy is not due to return to training until next week along with those players who took part in international matches after the end of last season,” said a club spokesman.
“He will return with the rest of the players next week.”
