Edu setback for Gunners
Arsenal midfielder Edu has suffered a fresh setback in his bid to return from injury for tomorrow’s Champions League second leg tie against Bayern Munich.
Edu was poised to return after a hamstring problem but sustained a new knee injury during training today and will be assessed again tomorrow morning after undergoing a scan.
Arsene Wenger will also delay a final decision on Robert Pires’ fitness, although the Frenchman made an encouraging return in today’s session after an ankle injury sustained at Southampton.
“Edu has a slight problem. I have a worry about him. He has to see a specialist this afternoon for a scan and we don’t yet know the outcome,” revealed Wenger.
“With Robert Pires, we will see how he responds following training. He joined in for the first time and was very good. I will have a chat with him tonight.”
With Pascal Cygan ruled out with a thigh injury and Sol Campbell still sidelined, 20-year-old Swiss centre-back Philippe Senderos will make his first Champions League start alongside Kolo Toure.
Reserve keeper Manuel Almunia (groin) has also joined Gilberto Silva and Justin Hoyte on the sidelines, while Emmanuel Eboue is ineligible for Champions League duty.
Provisional squad: Lehmann, Taylor, Lauren, Cole, Clichy, Toure, Senderos, Vieira, Edu, Flamini, Fabregas, Pires, Reyes, Ljungberg, van Persie, Henry, Bergkamp, Aliadiere.
