Arch-rivals to clash in Cup

Manchester United will face Arsenal at Old Trafford in what promises to be the highlight of the Carling Cup quarter-finals.

Manchester United will face Arsenal at Old Trafford in what promises to be the highlight of the Carling Cup quarter-finals.

The match follows last month’s fractious meeting of the teams in the Barclays Premiership, when United’s 2-0 win ended Arsenal’s 49-match unbeaten run.

Arsene Wenger was later charged by the FA for post-match comments made about United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, and there was reportedly food thrown at Sir Alex Ferguson after the match.

The tie will take place either on November 30 or December 1.

United last night beat Crystal Palace 2-0, while Arsenal’s youngsters overcame Everton 3-1 on Tuesday.

Other ties see Fulham face Chelsea at Craven Cottage in a West London derby, while Martin Jol’s Tottenham tackle Liverpool at White Hart Lane.

The only remaining non-Premiership side in the draw, Watford, are rewarded for their superb 5-2 victory over Southampton with a home tie against Saints’ south-coast rivals Portsmouth.
