PFA chief backs players' black-out

Players’ chief Gordon Taylor today backed the England squad’s decision to impose a media black-out following their 2-1 victory in Poland, insisting it was the only way they could register a protest at the treatment of David James.

The England players refused to talk to the television or press after last night’s match in Katowice, apparently following articles which likened Manchester City keeper James to a donkey.

Taylor told the Press Association: “There have been personal and vindictive articles about David James in particular and nobody more than David accepted that he made a mistake against Austria.

“Criticism is part of life for a professional player but when you get this sort of derogatory criticism then perhaps this is the only way they can respond as a squad and make a point.

“I would not expect it (the media blackout) to continue unless that sort of coverage continues, but we must remember that players are paid to play not to speak, there’s a right to free speech in this country and it’s up to you whether to speak or not.”

Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association, said he had not been consulted by any of the England players about their decision but added he hoped England fans would understand.

“This was definitely not aimed at supporters because I believe the affinity between the fans and the players is very good, it was aimed at certain sections of the media,” he said.

“If the media want to be personal and vindictive you cannot blame the victims for wanting to respond.

“It was very disappointing on the eve of such an important match that instead of the coverage being positive and uplifting from the media back home it was very derogatory and in some cases was beyond the pale.”
