Midfielder Mark van Bommel could face injury heartbreak this summer as an-ongoing Achilles tendon problem threatens to ruin his chances of being fully fit for Euro 2004.

The PSV Eindhoven captain and Tottenham and Aston Villa target was taken from Holland’s training camp in Noordwijk to an Amsterdam hospital where he will undergo scans.

Van Bommel suffered the injury originally in PSV’s match with ADO Den Haag on the penultimate weekend of the Dutch season.

It was hoped that he would be fit for this weekend’s friendly match with Belgium, but that now seems unlikely.

Van Bommel has another week to fully recover from the injury before coach Dick Advocaat hands in the final list of players to UEFA on June 2.
