FA call for video of Smith bottle incident
The Football Association today announced they will review video evidence of an incident where Leeds striker Alan Smith threw a plastic bottle into the crowd during last night’s match at Elland Road.
Smith threw the bottle back into the crowd, believing it had been hurled at a Manchester United player.
An FA spokesman said: “We are awaiting the official’s report and will be requesting video footage.”
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said no complaint had been made and they would not become involved until one was lodged.
“We have not received any formal complaint about this so there is no inquiry. At the moment this is not an incident we are looking at,” said the spokesman.
Meanwhile, the FA will be contacting QPR over abuse suffered by former Arsenal striker Ian Wright in the directors’ box at Loftus Road last night.
Home fans targeted Wright after his adopted son Shaun-Wright Phillips opened the scoring for Manchester City and he had to move seats.
The FA spokesman said: “We are contacting QPR to establish what exactly happened. Our understanding is that a fan was arrested but it is important we have conversations with QPR officials to establish the facts.”
It is unlikely that QPR will face any action as they acted very quickly to deal with the trouble.
The FA have also requested video footage of Blackburn’s match at Southampton on Saturday where Rovers manager Graeme Souness was involved in a bust-up with Saints assistant boss Dennis Rofe.
The referee’s report has been received by the FA and confirms the incident was not witnessed by match officials.
