Supersub puts Cardiff in Division One
Cardiff City 1, QPR 0 (after extra-time)
Former Middlesbrough striker Andy Campbell came off the bench to fulfil Cardiff’s undoubted potential with an extra-time goal which put the Welsh club into the First Division.
Campbell had replaced City’s star forward Robert Earnshaw with 11 minutes of normal time remaining, and the striker took his chance in stunning fashion, volleying a wonderful shot over QPR goalkeeper Chris Day deep into extra-time at the Millennium Stadium.
Rangers had been the better side for long periods of a desperately disappointing Division Two play-off final but they had no reply to Campbell’s finish.
The 1-0 victory ensured City made amends for failing to finish inside the top two, and completed the first stage of the Ninian Park revolution under Lennie Lawrence and chairman Sam Hammam.
The game opened up in the second period and QPR substitute Tommy Williams scuffed an effort past the post after beating his marker and running into the box.
Legg then whipped a free-kick over bar, although Day had it covered, but with little over five minutes to go Campbell snatched a dramatic victory with a clinical finish.
The former Middlesbrough striker ran on to a hopeful long ball from Legg and lifted a perfect volley over Day and into the bottom corner of the net to finish Rangers.
