Beckham rumours don't faze Figo

Luis Figo has dismissed speculation linking David Beckham with a big-money move to Real Madrid and insisted he has nothing to prove at Old Trafford tonight.

If Beckham did quit Manchester United in a £38m (€55m) deal which some pundits have suggested has already been agreed, right-sided midfielder Figo is the man whose place would most be at risk.

The Portugal international’s stunning goal in the Bernabeu a fortnight ago which set up the European Cup holders’ 3-1 first-leg win only emphasised his quality and with Beckham once again failing to get the better of Roberto Carlos, Figo emerged in clear credit.

If Beckham is equally ineffective this evening, Real’s interest may cease. But even if it does not, Figo remains completely unfazed.

“Speculation will always exist in football,” he said. “There is nothing you can do about it, so there is no point replying to it.

“I don’t have anything to prove to anyone. I will just keep my mind fully focused on the game.”
