Round-up of tonight's games
Filippo Inzaghi took his goals tally to seven in three Champions League outings by scoring both for AC Milan in their 2-1 win at Bayern Munich tonight.
The former Juventus striker has overshadowed new arrival Rivaldo with his performances for the Serie A giants in the early stages of this season, while injured Andrei Shevchenko has not been missed, and he was at his poaching best at the Olympiastadion.
He stroked in his first from six yards in the 52nd minute and headed the winner six minutes from the end.
Claudio Pizarro nodded in Bayern’s goal but they wasted a series of good chances and are now in real danger of failing to reach round two.
After their three Group G matches to date, the 2001 European champions have just a single point and will probably need to win their next three games to stand a chance of progressing.
They are alongside Lens at the foot of the table, eight points adrift of Milan and five behind second-placed Deportivo La Coruna who left it late tonight against Lens.
It was the French team who went ahead in the stunned Riazor, with Daniel Moreira scoring a terrific goal on a counter-attack in the 11th minute.
But a Roy Makaay volley, his fourth goal in the Champions League, levelled it up for the Spaniards after 49 minutes and substitute Joan Capdevila won it with his 79th-minute strike.
Cesar Martin headed the third five minutes later to give Deportivo a 3-1 win which looks more comfortable on paper than it did on grass.
Bayer Leverkusen got their first points on the board by beating Maccabi Haifa 2-0 in the Israelis’ temporary home of Nicosia, with Marko Babic scoring twice - the second a fluke as he miscued a cross from the left flank.
They remain well adrift of Group F leaders Manchester United who ran up their third successive win with a 4-0 romp against Olympiakos at Old Trafford.
Ryan Giggs scored twice, with Juan Sebastian Veron and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also on the scoresheet as the Greeks folded after captain Ze Elias was sent off on the stroke of half-time.
United have nine points, but Maccabi, Leverkusen and Olympiakos are all on three points and second place is up for grabs.
Javier Saviola netted twice for Barcelona as they romped home 3-1 at Lokomotiv Moscow in an early kick-off to keep their 100% winning record going in Europe.
Patrick Kluivert shot Barca ahead before the young Argentinian forward headed in his first and then struck the third from 18 yards just after half-time.
James Obiorah scored Lokomotiv’s consolation goal with an excellent solo effort in the 56th minute, but it did not inspire a serious comeback and Kluivert could have made the scoreline more emphatic late on but struck the post with a left-footed drive.
Galatasaray dominated almost from start to finish but they could only manage a goalless draw in Istanbul against Club Brugge.
They remain second behind Barcelona in Group H, with four points while Barca have nine.
Juventus went two points clear at the top of Group E after two Alessandro del Piero goals in the second half – a free-kick and 15-yard finish – proved enough to beat Newcastle in Turin.
Del Piero has partnered Inzaghi for Juventus and the Italian national team, and he too has started the season in a rich vein of form.
Worrying for Juve tonight, Del Piero’s strike partner Marco di Vaio had to be rushed to hospital after coming off worse in an aerial collision with Newcastle centre-back Andy O’Brien in the first half.
He lost consciousness initially but came around at the hospital.
The other match in that group saw Feyenoord manage just a goalless draw at home to Dynamo Kiev, who had lost their previous seven away matches in the Champions League.
