Fell relieved Rio saga is almost over
Leeds United Supporters’ Club chairman Ray Fell was relieved that an end now seems in sight to the confusion over Rio Ferdinand’s future.
United chairman Peter Ridsdale has told Manchester United they must make a bid which matches their valuation of Ferdinand by noon tomorrow or any deal is off.
The Red Devils have already had two bids rejected for the England defender and now have less than 24 hours to get their man, and Fell is pleased the matter will soon be closed one way or the other.
Fell said: ‘‘At long last we are going to have a conclusion to this saga and I think most fans will be happy about that.
‘‘Once Rio expressed his views to join another club Leeds have stuck to their task and they are asking for the money up front.
‘‘Leeds fans will accept that he’s gone and can now look forward to what’s happening at Leeds.’’
Though he was glad to see the issue close to resolution, he admitted Ferdinand’s departure for their bitter rivals at Old Trafford would still hurt and anger the club’s fans.
‘‘No-one likes selling top players to other top clubs and this is a difficult one for fans to stomach
‘‘Manchester United showed a few weaknesses last year and you don’t look to your own club to help them solve them,’’ he told Sky Sports News.
Ferdinand did not fly out with the rest of the Leeds squad to the Far East today, citing ‘‘mental fatigue’’ caused by the constant speculation surrounding his future.
Leeds striker Mark Viduka believes Ferdinand must pursue whatever avenue is best for his blossoming career.
Viduka said: ‘‘Is he going to go? That’s the million dollar question.
‘‘He’s got to make the decision. He knows what’s best for him.’’
