Huddink hails Korean heroes

South Korea coach Guus Hiddink led the rapturous World Cup celebrations on an historic night in Busan.

Goals in either half from Hwang Sun-Hong and Yoo Sang-Chul sank Poland and enabled the co-hosts of the 2002 tournament to end a 48-year wait to claim their first ever World Cup finals victory.

Hwang fired the Koreans ahead in the 26th minute and there was no way back for the Poles when Yoo added a second eight minutes into the second half.

‘‘To be honest I feel exhausted but I’m very happy,’’ said Hiddink, who was hugged by his players and officials at the final whistle.

‘‘I’m very proud of the boys and the fans who gave us terrific support.

‘‘It’s a two way road - the fans give to us and we give to the fans.

‘‘The only guarantee I could give was that this team is going to the limit of its energy and you saw that tonight.

‘‘Now we will celebrate this historic first victory - we’ll do it in our modest way and then prepare for the next game (against the USA in Daegu on Monday).’’
