A young girl has died in hospital days after a road crash in Co Cavan that also resulted in the death of her mother, a woman in her 50s.

The child had been a passenger in a car involved in a collision with a flatbed van on the R162 at Corclare, near Shercock, at about 4.30pm on Friday, July 24.

The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was named locally as writer and former journalist Nell Raven

The child was taken to Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street in Dublin for treatment but passed away on Tuesday afternoon.

Ms Raven, 53, became an Irish citizen last month and recently survived a cancer battle.

She first worked as a news journalist in London before moving to Hong Kong and Pakistan where she worked for UK and international news publications including The Telegraph and the South China Morning Post.

She was writing a novel at the time of her death, it is understood.

Gardaí said they are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision and have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

Any road users who were travelling in this area between 4.15pm and 5pm on Friday, July 24, and who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
