UEFA Cup: Advocaat dedicates win to loyal fans

Dick Advocaat dedicated Rangers' sudden-death penalty shoot-out win over Paris Saint Germain to the 10,000 fans who had followed them to the French capital.

Rangers won the UEFA Cup third round tie 4-3 on penalties after the entire tie had remained goalless.

Advocaat said: "It was quite clear that I was happy with the result but I am more happy for the 10,000 fans from Scotland who came to Paris to support us.

Advocaat added: "When you miss a penalty two minutes from the end you usually lose.

"However it was an excellent result that was well-deserved and that was the most important thing."

Advocaat had spoken before the game of his strikers' need to find the back of the net but it was not to be.

He said: "I felt we played some excellent football in the first half. We controlled things and created three or four 100% chances.

"The second half was more balanced but we still had possibilities right at the end.

"PSG were more positive in extra time but we were the lucky ones with the penalties."

PSG coach Luis Fernandez said he hoped Rangers would go all the way in the competition as that would make the defeat easier to swallow.

He said: "I hope they can get through to the final because in that case we can say we were beaten by the finalists."

Fernandez added: "We were playing quality opposition. We had players against us who had experience. There were several internationals in their team."
