Premiership: Veron ‘unsure’ United is the right move
Juan Veron claims he is not sure he wants to join Manchester United and that he needs time to think over his future.
Unconfirmed reports from Italy claim United have agreed a British record £25million deal with Lazio for Veron and that the transfer could be completed within days.
Veron, who was cleared to leave Lazio when he was acquitted this week of falsely obtaining an Italian passport, admits negotiations with United are at an advanced stage.
However he is still not certain that joining United is the right move and he claims he is still weighing up his options.
The Argentine international midfielder is wanted by Inter Milan and Juventus and he has not ruled out remaining in Italy.
He said: ‘‘It’s a difficult situation for me. Perhaps it’s difficult for me to stay in Italy, who knows?
‘‘I have offers in place, but I’m not ruling out staying in Italy. At the moment I need time to think about things.
‘‘The talks with Manchester United are at an advanced stage. That’s an option and it would not be the end of the world if I went to England.
‘‘I just think it would be difficult for me to stay at Lazio and the burden of the trial has certainly taken its toll on me and my family.
‘‘It would be nice to go away knowing my future was all sorted out, but it isn’t.
‘‘I haven’t reached the point yet where I know the answer to that question.
‘‘I have to consider so many things and any decision I take, I will take my time over it.’’
England manager and ex-Lazio coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who signed Veron from Parma two years ago, has urged the 26-year-old to move to Old Trafford.
Veron respects the views of his former manager and Eriksson’s advice might tip the balance in United’s favour.
‘‘I know Eriksson is a man whose judgement you can trust,’’ Veron said.
‘‘If he did think England was right for me then I would take that into consideration.’’
