However, it could have been a victory if an offside decision had not gone against them.

Alan Smith was deemed to be offside after Wes Brown scored an own-goal in extra-time.

Earlier, Leeds had missed a penalty at the end of the second-half after United goalkeeper, Fabien Barthez had fouled a Leeds striker.

However, the penalty was not converted.
