Mixed day for Redknapp
In the wake of Christopher Samba signing for a club record fee believed to be in the region of £10 million early in the day, Redknapp then snapped up Tottenham duo Jermaine Jenas and Andros Townsend, with the former penning an 18-month deal and the latter joining on loan until the end of the season.
But it was the non-signing of West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie which caused the most fuss, with the Nigeria international arriving at Loftus Road unannounced and, according to QPR, uninvited, trying to make something happen.
While Odemwingie was addressing a media scrum telling them he was ready for a “new chapter” in his career after a public display of dissent about his situation with West Brom, Redknapp was telling a radio phone-in that he wanted to sign the 31-year-old.
At the same time, West Brom released a statement saying they had not allowed Odemwingie to talk to QPR, something Rangers later backed up.
It was after announcing he had signed Jenas and Townsend, players he had worked with at Tottenham, that Redknapp addressed the issue of Odemwingie, saying he felt sorry for a player who now faces an embarrassing return to West Brom.
He said: “I think he probably felt that the deal had been agreed between the clubs and it hadn’t and it was all a mix-up really.
“I feel sorry for the lad and the way the whole thing’s turned out. It wasn’t any of our doing. The wires got crossed somewhere.”
The acquisitions of Jenas and Townsend caused Redknapp considerably less trouble.
“It’s great to be linking up with Harry again. Him being here was key to me making the move,” former England international Jenas said.
It was the signing of Samba which initially caused real shockwaves, with the 28-year-old signing a four-and-half-year deal with the relegation battlers.
“This is an unbelievable signing. [Owner] Tony Fernandes deserves a lot of credit for this one — he has worked so hard on bringing him in,” said Redknapp. “Chris is just what we need. He’s a monster.’’
Arsenal left it late but managed to get a signing in before the window shut, securing defender Nacho Monreal from Malaga on a long-term contract.
The Gunners announced the move on their official website just as the deadline approached, saying they had paid an undisclosed fee for the 26-year-old.
The Spain left-back arrives at the Emirates Stadium at a perfect time for manager Arsene Wenger, who last night lost Kieran Gibbs for three weeks with a thigh injury.
“We are delighted that Nacho Monreal has agreed to join us. We have been monitoring him for some time now and are really pleased that we’ve been able to agree this move today,” Wenger said.
“Monreal is a strong left-sided defender with good experience at both club and international level. He is a technically gifted player, a good crosser in the final third and strong in the air. Monreal will add quality to our squad and of course, to our defensive unit. We all look forward to him playing for us.”
Norwich signed two strikers, lost another and were told by Celtic that they would get nowhere with bids for Gary Hooper.
The Canaries swapped Steve Morison for Leeds’ Luciano Becchio and signed Kei Kamara but continued to pursue Celtic’s Hooper, for whom they made several offers.
But Celtic manager Neil Lennon took to Twitter to shut every approach down.
“Contrary to reports there have been no fresh bids for Gary and even if there are they will be rejected..he is NOT for sale,” Lennon wrote.
Elsewhere, Sunderland completed the signing of Danny Graham from Swansea for £5m.
As a result, Louis Saha left the Wearside club by mutual consent.
David Beckham will play for Paris St Germain for free after vowing to donate his entire salary from his new club to charity.
The generous gesture by the 37-year-old, who signed a five-month deal with the Ligue 1 leaders, could see a Paris children’s charity receive up to £3m.
Other deadline day deals saw Stoke splash out £2.5m on US winger Brek Shea from FC Dallas while also acquiring goalkeeper Jack Butland from Birmingham. He will, however, be loaned straight back to the championship club.
Elsewhere, Everton signed defender John Stones from Barnsley, Wigan bought Paul Scharner in on loan from Hamburg.
Fulham signed Urby Emanuelson and Stanislav Manolev on loan from AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven respectively.
