Roy Hodgson has been a student of football management for the best part of 36 years, ever since the days when, complete with 1970s mullet haircut, he started his first coaching role at Halmstad in Sweden and toured the world to study other coaches in action.

In academic terms, he has the equivalent of a BA, an MA, and a doctorate all rolled into one; and, through his work on UEFA’s technical panels, even has the stature to judge his peers.
