Keane helps LA to MLS Cup glory
Keane unlocked a stubborn Houston Dynamo defence in the 72nd minute with a perfectly weighted pass into the path of the onrushing Donovan who sent a cheeky chip with the outside of his right foot past keeper Tally Hall.
It bridged a gap of six years for the star-studded California outfit, their third MLS title finally arriving in what many people believe will have been David Beckham’s last game at the club.
Keane, who admitted afterwards he had begun to tire in the final stages of the game, had a great chance to break the deadlock in the 49th minute.
After latching on to a through ball, the Ireland captain appeared to slip before getting away a low drive across the face of the goal.
He put the ball in the net in the 57th minute but he was hard done by when a marginal offside call went against him.
“Obviously I had a couple of chances,” Keane said afterwards.
“I wasn’t sure whether or not I was offside for my goal. I should have hit the target just before that. Nevertheless, I set up Landon for his goal and we won the championship and that’s the most important thing.
“It was a very tiring week to be honest with you. I was a bit tired tonight. The travelling obviously got to me a little bit there towards the end. We won, that’s the main thing.”
